How Professional Wellness Can Help You Have a Happier, Healthier Career Life
Cris Antonio |
Did you know that adults spend an average of 48 years working?
That’s crazy! No wonder our parents and grandparents are burned out by the time they retire. But this also sheds light on a vital point: if we’re spending a lot of time at work, shouldn’t our workplaces value our well-being?
There are heaps of studies that point toward the importance of employee well-being. When workers are healthier and happier, they’re more productive and engaged. This doesn’t just involve adding ping-pong tables or employing casual Fridays.
Do you find yourself dragging your feet to work? Maybe it’s time to discuss professional wellness with your manager.
What is professional wellness?
Professional wellness (also referred to as occupational wellness) is about creating an environment that benefits employees and the organization. The goal is to keep workers happy, content, and healthy so they become more resilient, engaged, and productive.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), there are several elements to employee well-being, including but not limited to:
Health. Mental and physical safety, stress management, health insurance, disability support, etc.
Good Work. Effective management, fairness, and transparency, working hours, job design, etc.
Principles. Leadership, ethical standards, diversity, corporate social responsibility, etc.
Social. Teamwork, involvement in decision-making, consultations, genuine dialogue, etc.
Financial. Fair pay and benefits, retirement plans, access to independent financial advisers, etc.
When wellness is prioritized, management will find that it’s easier to retain top talent, recruit the best people, and employees make improved decisions.
Do you include professional wellness in your to-do list?
If not, maybe you should!
Whether you’re a manager, student, or average office worker, prioritizing professional wellness is crucial in achieving goals, pushing through adversities, and staying healthy.
The idea that the workplace should be a safe, productive space isn’t new. But it wouldn’t be until 1979 that the first worksite wellness program would be introduced. And while many companies today offer various employee assistance schemes (e.g., childcare, counseling, stress management, etc.), implementation is still challenging.
So in celebration of Professional Wellness Month this June, take the initiative and give yourself – and your team – the gift of learning!
The To-Do-List for a Better, Happier, More Successful Career Life is an in-person workshop that will help you revamp your professional life. You’ll discover more about grit at work, managing your finances, plus how to build a happy team. Wellness is Everyone’s Job
Professional wellness and success in your career don’t just happen. We all have a responsibility to take care of ourselves and the resources given to us.
For workers, this means asserting rights to a safe, productive workplace that prioritizes fair wages, career development, and positive relationships. Of course, you need to look after your physical well-being, too. Eat right, stay active, and get a good amount of sleep so you’re able to do your best. Managers, on the other hand, need to be role models and ensure the proper implementation of wellness initiatives.
Continuous learning should be part of professional wellness. Employees must have access to training, mentoring, career reviews, and innovative workshops. It’s important that your job makes use of your unique skills. Otherwise, this could result in boredom or feelings of tediousness. If your tasks aren’t challenging enough, talk to your manager or supervisor for support.
A holistic approach to occupational wellness isn’t possible overnight. However, with the right plans in place, you’ll soon find yourself looking forward to going to work.
